Our Customer is seeking a Customs/Import Attorney on a contract basis to help support their business needs. This role is 100% remote.

The ideal candidate will have strong subject matter expertise and in-depth knowledge of U.S. import laws, including HTS classification, country of origin (COO) determinations and marking requirements, U.S. tariffs (IEEPA, Sections 232 and 301), and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) import requirements, as well as experience engaging with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Strong program and project management skills are required, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and develop requirements for new compliance solutions. The successful candidate will be creative, self-directed, and a strong team contributor. This position will work under the direction of the global trade compliance counsel.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal and strategic advice to internal stakeholders on compliance with U.S. and international customs and import laws
  • Conduct HTS classifications, country of origin (COO) determinations (including marking requirements), and tariff impact assessments for products, infrastructure projects, partnerships, R&D initiatives, prototypes, vendors, and suppliers
  • Advise on additional U.S. and international legal and regulatory requirements applicable at the time of import (e.g., FDA requirements)
  • Partner cross-functionally to assess and mitigate import compliance risks tied to business initiatives and transactions
  • Support development, implementation, management, and continuous improvement of global trade compliance policies, processes, and controls
  • Support remediation efforts for issues identified through audits and investigations
  • Develop, review, and advise on global trade compliance provisions in contracts
  • Manage special projects and support broader compliance initiatives as needed
  • Direct and manage outside counsel partners as needed

Skills And Qualifications

  • J.D. degree and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar or foreign equivalent required
  • 8+ years of legal experience
  • 5+ years of experience counseling on U.S. import laws in a law firm and/or in-house setting
  • Strong expertise in HTS classifications, COO determinations, COO labeling/marking, and responding to regulatory inquiries
  • Experience drafting and negotiating global trade compliance contract provisions
  • Experience directing and managing outside counsel
  • Strong legal and business judgment with strategic thinking capability
  • Experience supporting technology, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and/or large-scale infrastructure industries preferred
  • Experience advising on international import and customs laws preferred
  • Experience with FDA requirements for medical device and laser importation preferred
  • Experience with other partner government agency (PGA) import regulations preferred
  • Experience with U.S. and international export controls and sanctions laws preferred
